The Process to a Miracle

It was the night of November 7, 2008 and I was not feeling well at all. I felt something was different and I wanted to go to the hospital, but Ben wanted to go to bed. So we went to bed...or Ben did. I didn't sleep one bit that night. At about 4:00 in the morning my contractions changed and got more intense. I just kept breathing through them and waited a little while longer for Ben to get some more sleep. Ben woke up at about 5:20 for work at 6. We showered and I knew that this was the day. Something was different. So Ben left for work and I told him that he better be ready because we are going to go in today and I will hold off as long as I can. Well I called my mom and told her that it was the day, and then the contractions hit harder. I couldn't breath. I ate some yogurt and milk, but I was in so much pain that I threw up twice. I called Ben at 6:15 and told him that I could wait until 7 to go to the hospital, but no longer than that. So he got a replacement for work and came home. We went into the hospital around 7:30. I couldn't walk into the hospital I was in so much pain. They put me into one of the rooms and I put the hospital gown on. The nurse came in to ask me a few questions and to check how far dilated I was. I was dilated to 5 centimeters , 90% effaced., and my amniotic sac was very bulgy and hanging down. Ben and I were so excited because that was a big change for us. The nurse went to talk to the on call doctor for my doctor because he was in Africa for a service mission. The nurse came back in with an IV and all the stuff to admit me. We were going to have a baby. I called my mom and told her that she needed to come up because we were going to have a baby. Now we were just supposed to wait for my water to break, and to dilate fully. It was a little wait for all of this, but I did it naturally and without any drugs to help make the contractions stronger. I did get am epidural about an hour after I got there. It was wonderful and it didn't hurt at all. It made it all worth the pain of everything to have the epidural. It started to kick in immediately and I told the anesthesiologist that I loved him. It was pretty funny. My mom came in the room and she was just glowing. She gave me a huge hug and it was so special to have her there with me. I was so happy. We waited a little while and then the BYU football game was on. We of course had to watch that with my mom there. That also helped to pass the time. The nurse came in periodically to check how far dilated I was, and on the last one I was 9.5 centimeters. The nurse told me to to push to see if that last little part would open up. Well that worked. So she went to call the doctor and ask whether we should break my water or just start to push. She came back and said we should start to push. That was the point that I became terrified. I was so scared and it was such a good thing that my mom was there to help me breathe and tell me that it was going to be okay. Ben was on my right side and he was also just helping me get through the being scared. The doctor and the nurse said that I would push for probably 2 and a half hours, but I only pushed for 45 minutes. I remember the nurse saying there is the head coming out. Then my mom and Ben would look down and say, “Oh wow.” It was really special to have both of them there. The nurse looked down and said that she had better go get the doctor because this baby was going to be born really soon. He came in and I only pushed through 3 contractions. I had to have an episiotomy in three spots which was not very fun, but the epidural helped with that pain. The last contraction, the doctor said, “This is the push that you deliver your baby.” I could feel the pressure from his head, and then I felt his shoulders come through. That is when I looked down at my precious little miracle. I started to cry because it was such a special experience that cannot be described. Braeden Todd Busey was born November 8, 2008 at 3:21 pm. He weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. He was beautiful from the moment that he came out. He didn't look scary or anything. He was absolutely a perfect little miracle. While the doctor was stitching me up, I was watching the BYU game with 11 other people in there. Braeden was the only baby born on that day, which is really special to our family anyways because he was born on the grandpa who we named him after's birthday. The rest of that day we relaxed and just enjoyed being a little family. The after process of childbirth is not fun, but oh so worth it. That night my mom went home to be with my little sister and Ben stayed with me. We wanted to keep the baby in with us, but we were both so tired that we eventually took him to the nursery. A little while later the nurse brought Braeden in so that I could feed him. After that, I just kept him by my side. I wanted to have him there. Ben slept pretty well, but then he always does. We have such a good baby. The first night he just ate every two hours and didn't really cry at all. That next morning I really wanted to shower. So I got up at 7 and showered. It felt so good to shower. Afterwards, we just waited for all the guests to arrive to see that baby. We got bombarded with people that day and we were exhausted by the end of the day. So I was determined to go home and sleep in my own house. I told the pediatrician that I wanted to leave and I would do whatever it took to get me there. Doctor Glenn, the doctor who delivered the baby, came in to see if I checked out to leave. All was well and now we just needed the baby to be okayed. He got some tests done and they said he was a little jaundice. So we had to take home some lights for him to lay under. After that we were free to go home. We put the baby in the car seat and headed out. It felt so nice to have our baby with us. Finally.

That night Braeden was so good. My mom stayed with us for two nights and two days. It was so good to have her help. Every little thing that she did helped so much. She is an angel. Braeden didn't stay under the lights the first night because he always wanted to eat. So he slept by his mommy. The next day we had to go get tested again or the jaundice levels. My mom took the baby and I back to the hospital and we got Braeden tested. We went home and waited until we could find out the results. I called the on call clinic and they said his levels were higher than before. I was so worried. They were at a 10.5. Then a nurse called and said not to worry about his jaundice. If he is eating regularly and having regular bowel movements and he is not too yellow then he should be fine. I was so relieved.

The time has flown since then and we are going great. Ben is such a good father and him and our little one have bonded so well. They are so cute. I have two little men in my life now. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful little family. I am healing well, but still really sore. I will be for a few more weeks. It will take time, but when I look at my little son, all the pain goes away. I love being a mother and life is just great.
